Each May, New York, already a bustling hub of creativity, welcomes even more manifestations of great design during NYCxDesign. Once known as New York Design Week, the event, which encompasses five fairs (ICFF, Wanted Design Brooklyn and Manhattan, Sight Unseen, and Brooklyn Designs), has sprawled out in recent years to take over the better part of May and most of the city's boroughs. From Brooklyn's Industry City to the Javits Center on the banks of the Hudson River—and everywhere in between—theres's good design to be seen across the city.

Up the road in Boerum Hill, General Assembly’s design resource showroom Assembly Line is honoring the work of artisan-first Moroccan rug company Salam Hello with the debut of the IZRA collection. Areaware’s foray into furniture will be presented at multidisciplinary Lower East Side platform Colbo, where Sophie Collé’s Splat Side Tables are set to take center stage. Finally, in the West Village, Beni Rugs will present the 16-piece Archival collection of long Siroua sheep-wool rugs designed by tastemaker Tom Delavan. Also setting up shop in SoHo, OMET is a new luxury design platform launched by Mexican architect Lorena Vieyra. The inaugural collection will feature furnishings by Latin American designers crafted using materials sourced in Mexico. NYCxDesign has become known for its dynamic mix of group exhibitions that pop up all over the city during the festival’s duration.

Returning this year will be the annual Launch Pad program that introduces new products and fresh talent.
Finally, Warp & Weft’s collaboration with Deborah Berke made a big impression at the fair’s entrance, with understated rug designs that evoke the changing quality of light from dawn to dusk. This year’s New York Design Week will also be marked by a raft of group shows mounted, in part, by independent designers working collaboratively to support each other. Trend-setting editorial platform Sight Unseen is coming back strong in 2023 with an exhibit of new pieces by nearly two dozen studios, placed in dialogue with the work of France-based painter Heather Chontos.

Presented at the Lower East Side’s Voltz Clarke gallery, the showcase will include Danny Kaplan’s first ceramic and wood furniture pieces, and a selection from New York duo Alexis & Ginger’s debut collection. Founded in the nation of Georgia by Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia in 2007, the architecture and design studio coupled these pieces with tall, slender, rough-hewn lamps with upturned glass shades reminiscent of a closed flower. Lanvin selected the two women behind Rooms Studio as design partners to mirror the trailblazing path of founding designer Jeanne Lanvin. There were also many direct references to mushrooms, mold, and fungi, a continuation of a trend that’s already been extremely popular in décor and has taken over social media the same way Memphis did a few years ago. Reaching peak mushroom seems like an apt metaphor for the past couple of years — they’re ephemeral, strangely beautiful, and emerge from decay.
Later on, a Malletage expert from the Maison’s historic French workshops will demonstrate this specialized technique live, lending a glimpse into the artistry behind Louis Vuitton’s creations.
